Old Super 8 films show domestic happiness, an idyllic home and the director’s grandmother Rose as a young woman at the centre of family life. They do not show the violence in Rose’s marriage — or perhaps they do, once the images are watched differently.
While looking at the seemingly idyllic footage, Rose describes the reality of living with a violent husband. The film examines how images can conceal painful truths and how family narratives may be reopened in order to confront trauma.
